Our history, mission, and the people who lead the Society.
The Medical Society of New Jersey is the oldest medical society in the country. It was formed in 1766, ten years before independence from British rule was declared. Its existence was recognized by law in 1783, and in 1790 it adopted its official seal and was incorporated by an act of the Legislature.
The Union County Medical Society came into existence in 1869. This may seem relatively late, but Union County itself did not come into existence until 1857 when it broke away from Essex.
The Medical Society of New Jersey is formed — the oldest medical society in the United States, established a full decade before American independence.
The Medical Society of New Jersey's existence is formally recognized by law.
Union County is established, separating from Essex County.
A preliminary meeting is held at the office of Dr. Terrill in Elizabeth to consider organizing a medical society for Union County. Officers are appointed and a constitution and bylaws committee is formed.
The Medical Society of New Jersey votes to grant the application for a District Medical Society in Union County.
The first regular meeting of the District Union County Medical Society is held at the Court House in Elizabeth.
The Union County Medical Society is officially incorporated. The UCMS seal reflects this founding year.
UCMS continues to serve the physicians and residents of Union County, advocating for healthcare access, supporting physician education, and strengthening our medical community.
